- Presentation Summary: The National Wildlife Refuge System is a network of over 565 refuges over the United States and territories. The US Fish & Wildlife Service administers these refuges, and seven can be visited in the Bay Area. Marin Islands and San Pablo Bay NWRs will be showcased. These refuges were established to protect and provide habitat for migratory birds, endangered species, and provide the public a place to come and enjoy wildlife-dependent recreation. What’s that? Come find out!
San Pablo Bay NWR is undergoing restoration efforts to revert land back to estuarine habitat. Did you know that over a quarter of all the estuarine habitat that existed in San Francisco and San Pablo Bays occurred off the top of San Pablo Bay? Imagine what kayaking would have been like back 125 years ago! Come see what’s been happening to turn back the clock.
