- Topic: Sardinia: A Land and Sea Adventure
- Presenter: Dick Ryon
- Presentation Summary: Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily, and is about halfway between Italy and Spain. Evidence of human occupation goes back 5,500 years. Occupiers include Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Catalonians, and today, Italians. Our trip was organized by Mike Edwards, former WSK president and current member of both WSK and BASK. He contracted with Enrico Cararossino of Xplore in Genoa. Other BASK members on the trip were Helene Baribault, Matt Denecour, Frank Zhang, and Debbie Hathaway. Our trip was a combination of ocean kayaking and land excursions in the northern part of Sardinia and the Maddalena Archipelago off its northern tip. Ours was the first recognized paddling group to make the crossing between Sardinia and Corsica. The big deal was not the crossing itself but gaining permission from the Italian Coast Guard! After the Sardinia tour ended, my wife Doris and I spent four days at Cinque Terre, mainland Italy south of Genoa. I will show a bit of that, too.
