BASK
provides a forum for
people to
meet other paddlers, generate ideas for new trips and promote safe sea
kayaking. We teach each other about bay and ocean ecology, kayaking
techniques and safety; we help each other improve our sea kayaking
skills; we share experiences, information on local marine conditions,
warnings about hazards and unsafe procedures. One of our goals is to
establish a feeling of community among Bay Area Sea Kayakers.
You don't need to be
a BASK
member to
attend our General Meetings. These
informal
events are usually held on the last Wednesday of the month from 6:30 pm
to 9:30pm, when we meet to socialize and exchange information in a
relaxed atmosphere. We will meet at 6:30 pm for a light supper in the
Courtyard Caffe, room N-201 in the School of Nursing Building on the
UCSF campus. Bring your favorite eating utensil, plate, and a water
bottle. The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm back in room 217 in the School of Nursing.
Check this site before each meeting because our room assignment changes
occasionally. Click on the appropriate word for Directions
or Map.

Our next monthly meeting is on Wednesday July 30. Our featured speaker will be Larry Miller, who is an avid sailor, kayaker, and surfer. He works as a Research Oceanographer with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park and has published over 50 papers, many of which involve studies at Mono Lake. Other field areas include saline lakes in the western Great Basin and Antarctica. His talk will focus on environmental activism and 30 years of boating and aquatic research on Mono Lake.
Sarah Ratzesberger who works for Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary will be speaking about the Seabird Colony Protection Program that works to reduce disturbances to breeding seabirds along the North Central California coast. Karen Reyna, also from Gulf of the Farallones will talk about the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) and inform BASKers where some of the proposed "closures" are located using detailed maps, their possible impact on kayakers, and give an overview of the specific wildlife that these areas are trying to protect (some are not just for seabirds).
Come to the meeting to enjoy the program and meet other paddlers.

BASK is proud to be one of the American Canoe
Association's (ACA) Paddle America Clubs. |
| All
participants of BASK events need to sign the BASK Trip Liability
Waiver. It is the responsibility of the trip initiator to
ensure that
the waivers are signed before the activity begins and then delivered to
the member-at-large after the event is over. Click on the
small image of the waiver at the right to download it in preparation
for the trip you have initiated. |

To
help with the goals of the club, a
group of BASKers has put together a brochure welcoming paddlers to the
San Francisco Bay Area and giving lots of information a paddler would
want to know. Just click on the
small brochure on the left to download it. |
